Sleep Paralysis by Aki Hassan reads as a mental letter to someone who's far away but, at the same time, very close to the narrator's heart. It focuses on how the physical distance affects the relationship and makes it feel unreal or dreamlike at times. The comic's abstract visual qualities, paired with its frenetic and unstructured text, reflects what goes on in someone's mind when they're trying to sort out their overwhelming thoughts and emotions, and to distinguish reality from dreams.
Aki Hassan is a Singaporean Malay artist based in Glasgow who's been producing comics as part of a multi-disciplinary practice which includes performance, sculpture, and music, and is often concerned with the idea of self-discovery. They are also part of Glasgow's brand new small press and distro Power Couple Press.
